The Anatomy of a Cone

According to legend, the ice cream cone was invented by a Syrian immigrant named Abe Doumar at the World’s Fair in St. Louis in 1904. Doumar was selling a popular treat called zalabia, which is a waffle-like pastry. When he ran out of bowls to serve his ice cream, he had the idea to roll up some of his zalabia into cones and voila! The ice cream cone was born.

The Evolution of the Cone

Since the early days of the ice cream cone, many variations and improvements have been made to the design.

In the 1920s, the first automatic cone-making machine was invented, allowing for mass production of cones. This led to an increase in availability and popularity of ice cream cones.

In the 1960s, the sugar cone saw a design upgrade with the introduction of the pointed sugar cone, which made it easier to eat ice cream without it dripping down the sides of the cone.

Today, modern technology has allowed for even more advancements in cone design. Some companies are creating colorful and uniquely shaped cones using ingredients like caramel, cocoa powder, and fruits to create exciting new options for consumers.

The ice cream cone industry is a multi-billion dollar business worldwide. In the United States alone, it is estimated that over 3 billion ice cream cones are consumed each year.

The largest producer of ice cream cones in the United States is Joy Cone Company, based in Pennsylvania. They produce over 1.5 billion cones per year, in a variety of flavors and styles.


The humble ice cream cone has come a long way since its invention over a hundred years ago. With new technology and creativity, the possibilities for cone designs seem endless.
